Hi Brodie,
Generally tiels will be OK with finches, but because of their size can scare and stress the finches out. I did have them together years ago myself for a while but removed the tiels and replaced them with a pair of scarlet chested parrots because of this.

Kelvin, while the shopkeeper was right to an extent there are a number of parrots which will mix OK with finches, the neophema group (scarlets, turks elegants) and Bourkes parrots are generally all OK, as are the small lorikeets (littles, purple crowns & varieds).
I know one fairly large finch breeder who even has a pair of plumb headed parrots which he has kept in a mixed finch collection for several years with no worries except that they chew his cane finch nesting baskets.

Make sure there is no nestbox's or nest for them to breed in and plenty of space for finches to get away in case of a moody Cockatiel..Personnally l wouldn't just to be sure.. :)

I have had finches in with my tiels in the past but gave the finches to a friend.
The finches are so flighty and really bothered the tiels, kept landing on their heads etc :-/
Also, the finches really like sleeping in small nests and the tiels just destroy those nests ::)

Hi Brodie,
I guess it depends upon which type of finches you wanted to house with the tiels.

I currently have a pair of Java sparrows in with a pair of tiels, a pair of Bourke Parakeets and a pair of budgies. The tiels are very tolerant of the Java's and the 5 young that they have raised this year. In fact if anyone is a difficult fit, it would be the budgies, but only during the breeding season as the budgies can be too inquisitive into other birds nesting boxes. The rest of the time all the birds are tolerant of one another.

The Java's use a nestbox, so there is no trouble with the other birds picking at their nest.

I guess the only way you can know for sure, is to try the ones you wanted in the aviary. I would listen to the other breeders though as their advice comes through many years of careful breeding and keeping of birds themselves. We are all very fortunate to have access to so much free knowledge on this great forum.

Good luck if you decide to get some finches mate.
Cheers, Shauna ;D
