 Eclectus Parrots
« Thread Started on Sept 14, 2009, 6:46pm »

G'day all!

So I have a green cheeked conure, but he is absolutely madly in love with my dad.. as I'm moving out next year, I have a bit of a dilemma. I don't wanna split the two up!! I dunno what I'll do, but one way or another I would love an eclectus parrot.. either as an addition to the GCC or "instead" of...

I have done a LOT of reading online (instead of studying for bacteriology ahaha) and have decided this is the bird for me.. I joined up here to do further reading and find out more information - I am an open book!

1. First of all - the legalities of owning an eclectus. I live in Queensland and have been lead to believe that I will require a licence to own any of the subspecies.. Is this true or do I only need a licence for the Aussie subsp? If so, how do I go about getting it? I'm confused there and any help is greatly appreciated!

2. Next: who here also owns eclectus parrots? What are they like as pets? Tell me all you know!

3. What size cage do they need? As I'll be renting I won't be able to build an aviary, but would obviously love my friend to have all the room possible. He'll be coming out of the cage whenever possible, as I do not want him confined there, but what is a comfortable size for an eclectus male?

4. Any recommendation on WHERE I can get an eclectus parrot in Qld? I don't want a pet shop bird (I don't even think they exist in pet shops?) and don't want some dodgy breeder... Any recommendations on good breeders for (hopefully) decent prices?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help! Before you worry I'm rushing into this, please let me assure you I do not plan on getting an eclectus any time soon.. I have not got the money at the moment to give it all it needs, and I still need to learn a lot. That's why I'm posting here!

Thanks very much!

I know of a breeder she is fantastic and is willing to have you out to see her birds and also teach you anything you need to know, pm me if you would like the details. You do need a license you can get it on line. My girl is wonderful, she gets a bit noisy when she wants attention, my boy is a bit temperamental he can be quite nippy. They are quite demanding though that's for sure and you do need a special diet. I have very large cages for my birds however my girl prefers to be out and about on the playgym. My birds both sleep in boxes witha towel covering them, they actually put themselves to bed and get themselves up in the morning, the girl goes straight to the playgym and the boy climbs into his cage on his own. My male hates my female as soon as she is in the same room as him he starts crying, it's quite humerous, he is actually in love with my alexandrine, which is a bit scary. Hope this helps

Been looking more and more into the eccie. Think I have got a lot of research under my belt.

I'm giving myself a "cooling off" period until the start of next year as I'm fully aware of the commitment and would hate to buy an eccie because of a phase I'm going through, only to find myself 'bored' with it in a month's time! I thought it'd be smart of me to cool off a bit.

This is a cage I'm looking at - if I take the divider out will it be big enough for an eccie?

Cage looks pretty good Phil and if you decide not to go with an Eccie you could have two different pairs of smaller birds!!! ;D

For me Eclectus is one of the good talker.. Demands lots of attention.. They are kind of birds that likes to be praised by the owner.. Screaming is just in moderate level.. Especially the males whenever they reach maturity and the rest of the time they will remain calm.. Good as pet birdy.. :)
