Having a terrible time with my birds over the last week. All my birds are currently breeding and the other day I found my lutino female cockatiel dead in the nest box :'(. It happened very quickly as she was fine the day before, i didnt check to see if she was eggbound but i am assuming that that is what happened. Pretty devo as she was the sweetest bird ive ever owned and was a brilliant mother to all of her chicks.
We removed her mate from the aviary as he was upset and really annoying the other birds by trying to take over their boxes. We had him in a small cage but unfortunately he managed to open the sliding door and escape, he hung around for a while but we couldnt catch him :-[.
As if that wasn't enough we have lost a 2 baby cockatiels who were a couple of days old, it was the first time this pair had bred so it was probably inexperience. Then today my sister found my male mulga parrot dead in their aviary >:( :'(. He looked extremely healthy and had no visible marks on him so im thinking he may have had a night fright and run into the wire.
So as you can tell things here are pretty sad at the moment, we have had such a smooth run with all of our birds in terms of their health for a long time and now everything seems to be going wrong at the same time. I guess that is just part of owning pets, things dont always run smoothly.
R.I.P spike, blonde and chicks.

Sorry to hear your loss Jack .. just like you mentioned its part of birding at times...birds hide there sickness which makes it hard to see.

Hi Jack,
I am so sorry to hear of your sad losses with your birds. :'(

It is always so very hard to lose one of our beloved pets, let alone more than one in such a short period. but of course, there is never a good time to lose any.

I can only hope that you are doing ok and that the rest of your season and year will be far better than the latest part of it.

Wishing you all the very best,
Cheers, Shauna :)

Oh no, what a string of bad luck. Hope things turn around quickly.

I have heard alot of breeders are having a bad season this time round.

I to, have lost 2 young chicks only a day or two old. Both were from excellent parents who have never lost a chick yet. So who knows.

Fingers crossed for a better, brighter future. :)

Thanks for all of the support guys. Things are starting to look up, we have a 5 week old cockatiel chick being hand-raised who is looking great plus a couple of others on eggs who are also doing well.

Thanks for the offer mike, it sounds very tempting lol. Unfortunately i don't have much space at the moment even with the recently lost birds and i still have a few chicks on the way with my White Face pair, it will be the first time they have bred so excited to see what we get from them.
Jack :)

how horrible for you jack :( im having terrible times here too im 4/4 losses with my ringnecks at the mo plus my lutino adult cock bird :-/ over here in nz foreworks are legal, now when we moved to the rural life i thought sweet ill start up my passion ive always had for ringnecks .....until the idiots next door moved in grrrrr my ONLY baby left 2 weeks old and they started next door with the fireworks (like they have done all bloody week) and i heard 6 quick loud bangs and said to my partner dale if they r going to let those loud ones off ill have to go check or pull that baby the mother will poo herself and leave the nest butttttt after those 6 bangs they stopped so thought oh no she will be ok..... i was wrong and went to do my normal rounds of waterin and feeding so popped my head in for a look and sure enough it was dead :'( so gutted!!! over here ringnecks go for alot more than aussie so including my adult male probably lost close to $800 so far this season ::)

I know alot of people having terrible luck with birds this season, all mine are first timers so not sure if they will go down again this season but my poor green hen is shooting in and outta the box with a look of where the heck is my baby on her face :-/

I hope your luck has improved though :)

nah they are legal here u can set off as many fireworks as u like, the last couple years they have been thinking about banning them and just doing public displays which from my views is a good idea any animal doesnt cope well with that im surprised the cattle didnt run through the fences lol
